NSW motorhome specialist highlights the rise of solo female travellers

Ballina, NSW campervan specialist Horizon Motorhomes has celebrated International Women’s Day by producing a video that puts the spotlight on solo women travellers, including one 69-year-old woman who has just completed the iconic ‘big lap’ in her campervan.

Gold Coast resident Kari Rawlings had been road-tripping solo for years before recently making the leap and completing a circumnavigation of Australia with her pet dog Bella and trusty Fiat Ducato-based Horizon Melaleuca campervan nicknamed ‘Snowfall’.

Starting at Bribie Island, she clocked 60,000km in total, on both inland and coastal roads.

“I have to pinch myself that I actually just did that…but I did! Every single day was a highlight… Australia is just a wonderful country,” she said.

“I was surprised at just how many independent women there are on the road. So many women are there to support you if you need it and I’ve made lots of new friendships.”

Kari spent most of her journey free camping and only stayed at a pet-friendly caravan park if necessary.

“Because I have solar power and good-sized water tanks in my Horizon motorhome, I am able to be independent for a fortnight at a time if need be,” she explained. “I love the freedom and it’s the best option when you travel with a dog. They can run around and get the exercise they need after being on the road for quite a while.”

She said she has almost always felt safe and welcomed even in the most isolated of places.

“Even if you are travelling alone, you are never really all alone,” she said.

To stay out of trouble, she recommends being prepared and ensuring you’re as well equipped as possible because “stuff happens and that is all a part of the adventure”.
